Yolanda: The First Responders

Less than 36 hours later, Mammoth Medical Mission and Team Rubicon became the first foreign volunteer groups to make it to Tacloban. Thanks to Ambassador Cuisia's intervention, the two teams were able to make a difference and helped save hundreds of lives.

Elmer G. Cato

Elmer G. Cato

Elmer G. Cato is a Filipino journalist-diplomat. He started his journalism career as a 16-year-old cub reporter for Ang Pahayagang Malaya in 1983. From there, he went on to report for various news organizations such as the Manila Chronicle, Reuters News Agency, Kyodo News Agency, GMA 7, Philippine News and Features, and Saudi Gazette. He served as Nation Editor of the Philippine Daily Globe and Today before joining the Indonesian Observer in Jakarta as Executive Editor. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines in 1998 and has served in Manila, San Fernando, Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., and Baghdad.
