By nighttime, thousands of Kapampangans have made their way to Mabalacat and have massed up along the approach to Bamban Bridge. It was a spontaneous, unprecedented display of People Power. A few hours later, President Marcos fled Malacañang. After four days, it was finally over.

Sonny was among those I asked if it was a good idea to go to Iraq taking into account the serious security challenges I would face there. He told me to go for it. I knew that was what he was going to tell me. That's why I made sure I asked him.

Elmer G. Cato

Elmer G. Cato is a Filipino journalist-diplomat. He started his journalism career as a 16-year-old cub reporter for Ang Pahayagang Malaya in 1983. From there, he went on to report for various news organizations such as the Manila Chronicle, Reuters News Agency, Kyodo News Agency, GMA 7, Philippine News and Features, and Saudi Gazette. He served as Nation Editor of the Philippine Daily Globe and Today before joining the Indonesian Observer in Jakarta as Executive Editor. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines in 1998 and has served in Manila, San Fernando, Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., Baghdad, and Tripoli. He is presently the Consul General of the Philippines in New York.
