Elmer G. Cato

Elmer G. Cato is a Filipino journalist-diplomat. He started his journalism career as a 16-year-old cub reporter for Ang Pahayagang Malaya in 1983. From there, he went on to report for various news organizations such as the Manila Chronicle, Reuters News Agency, Kyodo News Agency, GMA 7, Philippine News and Features, and Saudi Gazette. He served as Nation Editor of the Philippine Daily Globe and Today before joining the Indonesian Observer in Jakarta as Executive Editor. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines in 1998 and has served in various capacities in Manila, San Fernando, Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. He served as Chargé d'Affaires en pied and Head of Mission of the Philippine Embassies in Baghdad from 2015 to 2018 and Tripoli from 2019 to 2021 and as Consul General of the Philippines in New York from 2021 to 2022. He is currently Consul General of the Philippines in Milan.
